So the fights begin. Woke up at Yosemite and figuring out how to see the entire park in a day and a half. Called the expert (Peter B), and he gave us some direction. The problem is, all the trails are rated hard and for experienced hikers only. I told Jen she is experienced but she does not believe me. I want to do the "4 mile trial" (8.6 miles roundtrip with 3750 elevation change) that shows a bunch of awesome sights but the stupid disclaimer says, "experienced hikers only." Thanks asshole that wrote up the trail. Now we may do do the trail that goes to Jackass Lake (seems appropriate). I can only write the blog when Jen is not mad at me (which is not all the time KK) or it isn't funny.
CORRECTION: Eric and Lisa's dog's name is Chewie not Jewey- My bad, and I assure you it was not an anti-semite slip. BUT, to be perfectly honest with you, when Lisa said her dog's name was Jewey, I said and I quote, "Jewey or Chewey?" and she said "yes." I assumed since Lisa is Jewish and most likely wants to be the head of some Hollywoo studio one day, maybe she named her dog Jewey. Also, to be fair, the picture Eric sent me of himself (since I forgot to take one) was an older picture and he is much grayer and looks a lot older (just kidding LOL).
Time to go and Jen puts on her brand new sneakers she needed to get in Malibu (I am sure we got a good deal). The part that makes this funny is that when she got to the store which we NEEDED to find, she refused to try them on. She said, I have been wearing ASCICS Nimbus for 10 years and I know how they fit. I said, ok but why not, we are not in a rush. Needless to say, we did not try them on. The minute she puts her shoes on, I hear, "wow, they seem a little tight." I did not say, "I told you so," because I did not want to start the day off that way (classic Jen).
Had breakfast to the smoke alarm going off (it has gone off every day during breakfast making since we started) and I am sure Jen will figure it out in week 6. Ok, so let me tell you about the speed bump that singlehandedly took out my ability to drink wine. The bump was at an angle so no matter how slow you went over it, the entire rig shifted hard from side to side and all my wine glasses flew out of the cabinet and broke. This was at a perfect time as we were looking for our campsite in the pitch black with no headlights and Jen was texting with Julian. This went over well. Fucking speed bumps.
Onto Yos I mite or Yosemite depending one how you say it. Stopped into a market to get Jen some advil (Message received honey). This is crazy, PG&E was doing some work there and dropped a tree on a house and it caught fire. The fire spread and took out acres of Yosemite and many houses. They were lucky the firefighters were able to save houses and put out which is amazing. The people were so friendly at Yosemite, and there were so many people there for November. A ton of foreigners from everywhere.
Without steamrolling Jen, we both decided to do the four mile trail, which was a trail that pretty much went straight up to glacier point showing us El Cap, Half Dome, Bridal Veil Falls, Yosemite Valley and a ton of other mountains. There were relentless switch backs that I wished I counted (if my dad was there he would have counted). We climbed for 5 miles, switchbacking like mo fo's in our running sneakers (I was in shorts and a t shirt) but we had our back pack (toilet paper, lighter, knife, water (4), snacks, warm clothes, head lamp, paper to make an easy fire). We decided after I got stung by a bee and almost fell off the cliff, that we should add a first aid kit. We will next time. On the way up, we were panting and sweating (me) like a dog while people coming down were all dressed in classic Patagonia down jackets, hats, gloves, etc. (couples holding hands like they were on their first date). When we looked at the mountain infront of us, we never thought (Jen) that we were climbing it (I knew the whole time). I am so proud of Jen for accomplishing this task. It ended up being almost a 12 mile hike and 5 up hill. Every turn was a money shot and we felt like we were being sprayed by the money shot. If you have one day in Yosemite, this is the trail to do. You can pretty much see everything. I saw El Capitan and was drawn to it, so I decided to learn how to mountain climb on You Tube. After 22 minutes and 1500 worth of gear (renting was too expensive), I climbed the El Capitan just like my brother Peter---(This really did not happen because I am so afraid of heights that if I don't look down on a trail, I cannot climb (see Pictures)).
On the way down, Jen skipped! I got it on video and will try and post. Our feet were mush at the end but we did it. On the way out of Yosemite, I wish I could have gotten this pic but Jen, took 8 Vanilla Diet Cokes and barely holding them together, threw them into a NON RECYCLING Bear bin outside a grocery store. They owner watched through the window with his eyes wide open. He could not get out in time to tell her there was a recycling bin around the corner. Its ok, because they will recycle (he told us) but it just costs a bit more. Jen said, I guess our $30 fee to the park will cover. Oh, sorry, we are New Yorkers (living in CT).
When we were in Santa Monica, we went to a restaurant called the Tap House. We ordered drinks and I of course got an IPA and Jen ordered a Diet Coke. "oh, we do not have soda, only fresh juices." Seriously, you sell 80 different beer on taps and no soda. Welcome to CA. Anyway, had a great day and tomorrow onto Hoover Dam and Lake Meade. No head lights and no hot water heater yet!
Oh, look at note I left on dash of car incase we died on hike.
Awesome.
